The First Food
Porridge is an essential part of our food chain right from our birth. Apart from mother's milk, a new born is fed with parboiled rice porridge. Later, starts mashed rice and lentil porridge, with mashed veggies.
As a grown up we too at times prefer porridge for our breakfast. They are quick and easy to make and have lot of option. I frequently used to make oats porridge or Poha porridge.
When i switched to millets, i changed to leftover millets porridge with varagu/kodo millet and Kambu/pearl millet. Starting of summer, this delish ragi porridge is famous in south India, you can see small food carts selling this on road side. But these are cold porridges, served with curd or buttermilk.
Both my kiddos love the Ragi and cashewnut porridge, when served warm, with lots of roasted cashews on top. So, like a feather to the cap of porridges, i bring you a simple homemade, Sathumaavu kanji/ health mix using Mixed millets made at home.
What are Millets?
A group of cereals which are mostly tiny in size, round in shape. There are about 6,000 varieties of millet throughout the world in different colors too. Millets are gluten-free and rich in B vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. The bran layers of millets are good sources of B-complex vitamins. Varagu or Kodo millet is a millet variety.
Since the millets are small grains, they are called as Sirudhaniyam, in tamil, literally meaning small grains.

Instructions
- Dry roast all the millets together. Keep the flame medium while roasting and it should turn golden brown and you should get the toasting aroma of the millet

- To the hot roasted millets, add almonds and roasted gram. Let it cool for 10 minutes.
- Take the ingredients in a mixer and grind it to a fine powder. Do not grind it continuously, as we have added almonds, there is a chance it will release oil and the power might clump.
